The Mona Lisa of India
Bani Thani was a singer and poet in the court of Kishangarh in the 18th century. She became the beloved of Raja Sawant Singh — so devoted to Krishna and Radha that he abdicated the throne and, with Bani Thani, settled in Vrindavan.
Around 1750, court painter Nihal Chand immortalized her likeness in a series of Radha-Krishna paintings, portraying Bani Thani with elongated features, lotus-shaped eyes, arched brows, and the grace of a queen. These paintings are now India's most recognized works of miniature art.
